Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) is seeking a graduate assistant with journalism experience to join its communications team. This individual should have strong reporting skills to interview researchers and write articles about new technologies. Three examples of previous articles with the candidate’s byline should be included in the application.

UMIACS (pronounced YOU-me-acks) is a multidisciplinary computing research institute that supports more than 80 faculty and 200 Ph.D. students from 15 departments across campus.
The institute’s primary mission is to use a team-based approach supported by powerful computing tools to address grand challenges in science and society. The goal of the communication’s team is to advance the visibility and impact of UMIACS research through online media, videos, social media and more.

As part of the UMIACS communications team, the graduate assistant will have the opportunity to hone their multimedia skills while building a portfolio of articles on technologies ranging from artificial intelligence and cybersecurity to the microbiome sciences and virtual and augmented reality.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • The qualified candidate must be enrolled in a degree program as a full-time graduate student at the University of Maryland in good academic standing.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Prior experience in writing specifically about science or technology is not required, but at least one of your three writing samples should be about a complex topic for a laymen’s audience.
  • Additional preferred skills but not required include photography, videography, social media, and website management.

Additional Information:

The strongest candidate will have the flexibility of choosing either a 10- or 20-hour work week. During the summer, this can be extended to either 20 or 40 hours depending on the graduate assistant’s preference.
