ASL/English Interpreter
Job Description
Johns Hopkins University seeks an experienced, nationally certified part-time ASL / English Interpreter to serve as a designated interpreter for a faculty member in the Department of Cognitive Science. This position is responsible for transliteration services, collaboratively supporting and teaming with other designated interpreters, and supporting scheduling needs of the team.
This is a benefits-eligible position.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Interpreting/Transliteration Support (50%)
- Provides ASL/English transliteration for on-demand and regularly scheduled meetings, talks, classes, and other functions. There may be occasional travel for conferences and invited talks.
- Adheres to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
- Provides flexibility in scheduling, occasionally accommodating evenings and weekends.
- Stays abreast of best practices in interpreting services and resources.
- Attends team trainings to stay current on topics such as Designated Client’s research, relevant vernacular, and working in an academic environment.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Schedule Coordination (50%)
- Schedules interpreters for classes, meetings, or university events for the faculty member.
- Develops robust understanding of faculty member’s needs and each team member’s skillsets to optimize the interpreter schedule and teamed assignments.
- Maintains scheduling system/calendar and timekeeping records.
- Coordinates or provides back-up coverage for occasions when an unplanned team absence occurs.
- Communicates with appropriate faculty, staff, and students to obtain appointment preparation materials and shares prep materials with team interpreters in a timely manner.
- Advises and coordinates with Team Lead on team schedule and staffing needs as appropriate.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of psycholinguistics, linguistics, cognitive science, computer science, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Demonstrates ethics training and ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrates evidence of successfully interpreting in a rigorous and fast-paced academic environment.
- Demonstrates experience in accomplishing detailed organizational tasks within established deadlines.
- Demonstrates ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.
- Basic computer skills and proficiency.
Technical Qualification or Specialized Certifications
- Current national certification as ASL/English Interpreter.
- Have and maintain Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) membership (national) and membership in at least one affiliate chapter of RID.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related field. American Sign Language (ASL)fluency.
- 4 years related interpreting experience, preferably in post-secondary settings.
- Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate Degree in Psycholinguistics, Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, or a related field is highly desirable.
- Eight plus years of interpreting experience in post-secondary settings.
